Over the past few years, Kickstarter has been the place for creative inventions, when it comes to gadgets. Now, there has been a new addition to the growing list of innovative campaigns on the platform. The device called BLOCKS, is the world’s first modular smartwatch. The new smartwatch will allows you to choose what features are important just for you, by utilising the space around the wrist and connecting Modules together to their Core. The BLOCKS has been under development over the past few years and the final product will feature a full round screen. The smartwatch has already crossed it’s target by raising $1,279,491 over $250,000 goal on Kickstarter.
The BLOCKS smartwatch will allow you to simply start simply with the watchface, called the Core [a fully functioning smartwatch on its own] and then add Modules into the strap to enhance functionality of your watch. You will be able to choose any modules you want and connect them together in seconds to build a unique customized smartwatch. The Modules are hot swappable and easily replaceable. You will not need to restart the watch when you connect a Module, and it will work straight away. Users will also be able to swap in a battery Module if the smartwatch is running low on power. For example, users can add extra battery Modules as you want. Each extra battery Module extends your device’s life by at least 20%. You can even connect a GPS Modulea orheart rate Module before exercising.
The biggest USPof the BLOCKS smartwatch is it’s future proof claim. The creators say you will not need a new smartwatch as you will be able to simply add a new feature. New Modules will be released continuallyp up with the latest technology. Also, BLOCKS is an open platform, which means there can be a wide variety of Modules for gaming, sports, healthcare, the workplace, or even experimental ones for academic research. The BLOCKStore will enable developers and companies to create and sell their own Modules.
The Core, or watchface is a fully functional on its own and includes features such as phone notifications, activity tracking and voice control. The creators plan to bring e-ink and rectangular screens in future as well. The BLOCKS will be compatible with both iPhones [iOS 8 and above, on iPhone 4s and above] and Android smartphones [all Android 4.0+ phones]. The BLOCKS smartwatchs will come with an app that can be downloaded on any iOS or Android device. It enables you to customize watchfaces, notifications and download apps. The BLOCKS’ operating system is based on the latest Android and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. Get the latest Module at the press of a button. It will be a place for both software (apps) and hardware (Modules). And you’ll also be able to trade in your old Modules with other BLOCKS users.
Design-wise, the BLOCKS will be made from a high quality polycarbonate and come with a special clasp that can adjust to different sizes. Small wrists will be able to fit the Core, 3 Modules and the adjustable clasp, while the mean wrist size will be able to fit the Core, 4 Modules and the adjustable clasp. The BLOCKS smartwatchs are IP67 certified, right now. The BLOCKS will be available in 3 colour options. Casings in other materials and colours will be made available next year onwards.
