Google apps

The usual apps

Samsung apps

Again the usual. However you have the game and Reader hubs, but for some reason the social hub was absent. Instead you have both the Facebook and Twitter apps separately.

Third-party apps

Polaris office is the edit version. We liked this minimum bloatware practice from Sammy.

Performance

It performed really well in some departments, and OK in others – but never poorly. It performed really well in the Quadrant.

Battery

The 4000mAh battery lasts well over a day and a half of heavy usage. It can go up to four days with moderate usage. Note that the usage level is subjective and depends on many factors. Turn off the GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth while idle and set display to automatic to maximize battery life.

Accessories

The USB data cable has the proprietary 30-pin plug on the other side, so remember to carry it with you or your other Galaxy Tab cable because Smartphone cables won’t work here. The earphones are pretty with clear voice while on the move. They are a bit low on the bass though. The extra earplugs are very handy for ears of different sizes.

Verdict

Let’s list down the pros and cons -

Pros:

  • Powerful processor and GPU with good memory
  • Good battery
  • Price is very competitive
  • Non-pretentious in terms of looks
  • Calling feature
  • Good to hold

Cons:

  • Not so high resolution display with weak pixels
  • Not many additional apps (which can be a disappointment to some people)
  • Built quality is not very rugged
  • Cameras

So give or take, would I buy this tablet? At $249 it’s more powerful than your Kindle Fire and Nook, although maybe does not come with such a good bundle as the later ones. It also gives you good muscle for multi-tasking, good looks and a handy overall package for a very decent. So yes, I would have bought it if it was my first tablet and I was tight on budget. If not, there are many choices and I would like to go up to a 10-incher that’s my personal view as I prefer bigger screens and performance over convenience and usability. There will be folks who would not need an ultra-sharp display and quad-core that they cannot manage while on the move – which is why Tablet are made for at the first place!
