Amazon has finally made the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch and 8.9-inch official both of which come powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor and Amazon’s latest Fire OS 3.0 dubbed “Mojito”

Amazon has officially announced the launch of its next generation of Kindle Fire tablets and the online retail giants have named their new tablets the Kindle Fire HDX 7 and 8.9, well it’s Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch and 8.9-inch to be precise.

The Kindle Fire HDX comes in flavors of 7-inch and 8.9-inch tablets just like its previous-gen tablets but with some bumped up specs and features. The Kindle Fire HDX 7 offers a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200p at 323ppi, while the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 offers 2560 x 1600p resolution at 339ppi with both tablets also offering a dynamic image contrast feature that compensate for the changing lighting conditions in an outdoor environment.

The Kindle Fire HDX comes in a new body design featuring slanting slopes with the speakers being relocated at the top which would prevent your hands from muffling the audio. Then there’s the usual volume rocker on the left and the big power button on the right. However, there’s only a single port on the HDX which is a micro USB port.

Both the 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablets come powered by a 2.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 800 processor along with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU which is a huge leap performance-wise from the previous generation Kindle Fire models.

The Kindle Fire HDX 7 features a single camera which is on the front while the 8.9-inch model features a front cam as well as an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and built-in image stabilization and also capable of shooting full HD (1080p) videos. The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX is also very light weighing only 13.2 ounces. The absence of HDMI and MHL is compensated by wireless streaming via cloud which is possible for devices such as the PlayStation 3, 4 and smart TVs.

Battery-wise Amazon promises upto 11 hours of usage on the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 and upto 17 hours in the reading mode.

The new HDX tablets also marks the debut of Amazon’s latest Fire OS 3.0 which has been dubbed the “Mojito” which offers an alternative to Google’s Android but has been designed mainly on Jelly Bean’s base with some new and unique features.

Amazon has also unveiled some unique Origami covers to go along with the new Kindle Fire tablets. The Origami covers houses built-in magnets allowing them to fold together in such a way so that the tablets can be positioned in either landscape or portrait modes. The 8.9-inch Origami covers offer a unique feature that triggers the photo app when the cover is slid down.

The Kindle Fire HDX 7 and 8.9 also brings enhanced enterprise support with the addition of VPN support and Mobile Device Management via companies such as AirWatch and Citrix.

Both the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch and 8.9-inch are available for pre-order with the Kindle Fire HDX 7 priced at $229 and the HDX 8.9-inch priced at $379. Shipping is set to start on October 18 for the 7-inch model and November 7 for the 8.9-inch model. However, the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch and 8.9-inch’s price in India is expected to be around INR 14,291 and INR 23,650 respectively without duty.

The Origami covers are also set to ship together with the Kindle Fire HDX 7 and 8.9 with the polyurethane covers priced at $50 and $55 respectively for the HDX 7 and 8.9, while the leather covers are priced at $65 and $70 respectively for HDX 7 and 8.9. The covers for the Kindle Fire HD models would retail for $45 and $60.
