Intel Core M Processor (fan-less) Launched

by on September 10, 2014

Intel has launched its first fan-less processor family based on 14nm architecture, dubbed Intel Core M, at the IFA trade show. The dual-core 14nm Intel Core M processor boasts 1.3 billion transistors on a die size of 82mm.  The new Core M is the most energy efficient Intel Core processor in the company’s history.

The new Intel® Core™ M processor is purpose-built to perform in the thinnest, fan-less ultra-mobile devices. Intel’s new processor will power new 2-in-1 devices from a various manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba.

The Intel Core M enables up to 50 percent faster computing performance and 40 percent faster graphics performance compared to the 4th generation Core processor. The Core M also delivers up to two times the compute performance and up to seven times better graphics compared to a four year old PC. The Core M processor can handle more than eight hours of video play, which is up-to 20 percent or approximately 1.7 hours longer battery life compared to the previous generation Intel Core Processor and doubles the battery life of a average four-year-old PC.

The 50 percent smaller Core M processor package, at 4.5 watts, has sixty percent lower thermal power than the previous generation, which lets OEMs design sleek, fan-less systems up to less than 9mm thin. There are already more than twenty Core M processor-based OEM products in the development pipeline. The first systems based on the Intel Core M processor will be on available for the holiday selling season. Manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo have already unveiled new/coming-soon Intel Core M processor-based devices across a range of sizes, styles and price points.

“Core M is the first of a new product family designed to deliver the promise of one of the world’s thinnest laptops and highest performance tablets in a single 2 in 1 device.”, said Kirk Skaugen, Senior Vice-President/General Manager, Personal Computing, Intel Corporation.

The Intel Core M processor is available in several versions – the 2.0 GHz Intel Core M-5Y10/5Y10a processors and the 2.6 GHz Intel Core M-5Y70 processor. The Core M-5Y70 is also available with Intel vPro technology for businesses with built-in security features to help protect data, user identities and network access. Also, the Intel Core M platform will support for high-quality audio, Intel® Wireless Display 5.0, Intel’s second generation 802.11 ac products and will also support wireless docking with WiGig from Intel.
